Lessons
"The piece I brought was in a state of limbo. After my lesson I had an enormously clear picture of what I wanted the finished product to be, not to mention a dozen or so really great concrete tips to get me there."

"The ideas and methods that I learned were all fantastic."

"One of the best features of the YCP. Peter really had a lot of good suggestions that actually opened my mind to some musical possibilities I hadn't previously considered."

"Orianna was great about tailoring the lesson to my individual compositional needs and aspirations. She was able to pinpoint my areas of weakness and give constructive feedback that I'll definately use."

"Dr. Brouwer was quite willing to discuss anything at all, and I pulled out a lot of useful information."

"You're great teachers and I look forward to working with you again."

Private Lessons Every student at the YCP gets an hour with a member of the composition faculty to discuss their music, their musical concerns and their musical goals. The YCP has a philosophy of teaching that is distinctly open-minded without rejecting the idea that there is a compositional craft to be honed. This is grounded in the belief that no matter what kind of composing you're doing and whatever your goals, there are lessons to be learned about putting music together more effectively. The ultimate goal is, of course, helping the students to fulfill their own unique potential and to keep them striving to achieve their very best.
